Meatloaf Layer

Mac and Cheese Layer

  • 2 cups uncooked macaroni

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups milk

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp dry mustard

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meatloaf

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, onion, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix just until combined.
Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Step 2: Bake the Meatloaf

Bake the meatloaf for 20 minutes to allow it to set.

Step 3: Cook the Macaroni

While the meatloaf bakes, cook the macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Step 4: Make the Cheese Sauce

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Gradually whisk in the milk until the sauce thickens.
Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and dry mustard.
Stir in 1½ cups of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

Step 5: Assemble the Casserole

Mix the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce.
Remove the meatloaf from the oven and spread the mac and cheese evenly over the top.
Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of cheddar cheese on top.

Step 6: Final Bake

Return the dish to the oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly golden on top.
