These Onion Ring Chips are ultra-crispy, golden, and totally addictive! They use a double-dipping method with buttermilk, seasoned flour, and crunchy panko crumbs to create the perfect snack or side dish. Whether you enjoy them with ketchup, ranch, or spicy mayo, they’re sure to disappear fast!
2 large onions, sliced into ¼-inch rings
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups panko breadcrumbs
Vegetable oil, for frying
Heat the Oil
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the rings.
Mix the Dry Coating
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
Prepare the Buttermilk Bowl
Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl.
Dip & Coat
Dip each onion ring into the buttermilk (let excess drip off).
Coat in the flour mixture and shake off extra.
Dip again in buttermilk.
Press gently into the panko breadcrumbs until fully coated.
Fry
Place coated onion rings into the hot oil in small batches. Fry 2–3 minutes, or until crispy and golden.
Drain
Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.
Serve
Enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauce!
Use sweet onions (like Vidalia) for milder flavor.
Keep the oil hot — dropping temperature = soggy chips.
Don’t overcrowd the pot or the coating won’t get crispy.
Air-fryer option: Lightly spray with oil and cook at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway.
